Collection Research: Land Owners & Patents, 1670-1812

ACCESSION  NO.  F. 1.

Property Owners, Land Names, & Acreage –
covering Anne Arundel (Howard), Baltimore, Frederick, and Montgomery Counties.

PLEASE NOTE:    Below combines information from lists of two land grants totaling 472 people — one list written by an unknown writer, and the other by Caleb Dorsey.   In transferring the original names in the documents written in old English, I have tried to decipher the handwriting by the first unknown author.   Between that document and the second typed document, there were a lot of obvious discrepancies  which I corrected, HOWEVER, some names might be duplicated as I had no way of telling if they were the same person — or like a father or son.    Properties are dated as of 1783 unless otherwise noted.   Some land patents are named “original” meaning it was the first land grant.  Many land grants were resurveyed by other buyers or heirs, and some even renamed in the process.   Some lands were not given names but called “Lotts”  (a lot) and some acreage is not known.   Some lands were so vast that they covered multiple counties.  There are some names only, which means either they did own land and it is not known, or that they owned other property — like animals / slaves –HOWEVER, I have not included those subjects  in this list.

IF NEW INFORMATION COMES TO LIGHT, THIS INDEX WILL BE UPDATED.  Any questions, please contact the Archivist/Curator at mary.bahr@peoplepc.com.

  1. What is the mission of this website? I am researching Southern HoCo. (AA County in Colonial Times). I have many plats drawn out electronically I am willing to share. I am seeking new sources of information, too. Would love to find out what your group is doing.

    • The mission of this website is to reach out to those interested in Elkridge’s rich and varied history, and hope to increase our membership and get more attendance at our events. We also want to start publicizing what we have in our collection. Our curator may be interested in what you have. There are several links under the collection tab. I suggest you go there. Contact our curator, Mary Bahr (curator@elkridgeheritage.org) for more information.

    • Hello Mr. Sims – I would be most interested in sharing information with you too and seeing your plats. Perhaps you could also visit us at the Society – you have only to make an appointment with me on weekdays. Please email me directly at msb@connext.net so we can talk – thank you!

  2. I grew up in the summer at Wyndhurst from 1949-1952. How can I help you preserve the history of Elkridge?

  3. Hello Mr. Penniman:

I appreciate so much for your contacting and offering preservation of history. I really need your help. First of all, I have been searching for the history of the Penniman’s in Elkridge and at Wyndhurst in particular, as we have little to go on from our collective Elkridge memories. I don’t know why, and so I’ve been diligently searching for your family for a long time. In fact, I called Penniman & Browne years ago and maybe talked with you (or someone else) briefly? I was contacted by a Penniman relation in England but he had not heard of Penniman’s in Elkridge. I also lived on Old Lawyers Hill Road, in Edgewood Cottage, inclusive of the years you mention. I would have been 5 years old in 1952. Do you think we could have been at a same neighborhood function? It would be wonderful if you gave a presentation at our society about Lawyers Hill, its history as well as yours too. Nevertheless, it would be wonderful to talk with you further and meet you in person if possible. Please contact me directly at msb@connext.net
Hope to hear from you soon. Mary
